Long lines, snooty sales people, aisles that aren’t made for the two kid stroller…here’s a long list of reasons why shoe shopping can be hair-raising and anxiety ridden. Now more than ever people are shopping online, even for shoes. It might seem daunting, (as you can’t hem a pair of stilettos if they are too high) but by using the following tips, the online shoe shopping experience can be both simple and enjoyable.
Know Your Shoe Size
Finding the perfect fit for shoes is a common problem, but it starts with finding the perfect size. Before buying online, make sure you have had your feet measured professionally in a shoe store. Once you know your ideal size, consider other issues: Have you recently had a baby? Do you plan on wearing thick socks with those boots? Are those narrow sandals really conducive to your Fred Flintstone feet (so lovingly nicknamed by your big sister)?
Study Up On Different Brands & Styles
Most women are familiar with which brands and styles they prefer. If you’ve bought a pair of shoes that makes your toes look like some kindergartener’s Play-Doh creation, then you’re not going to be keen on buying from that designer again. If you’re unsure of a brand, do a little online research. There are a lot of people out there just dying to complain about something; Google it, you’ll find them.
Shop for Bargains at Auction Sites and Classifieds
Auction sites are places to find real bargains as long as you are willing to do the work. Some people swear by classifieds. The key with either of these options is to know how to read the ads. Be sure you know if you are buying new or gently used shoes and where they are shipping from. Be careful of a deal that sounds too good to be true, such as Louboutins for (they’re more than likely replicas rather than the real thing).
Know the Return and Exchange Policy
Should you buy a pair of shoes and realize they don’t fit, you’re going to want to know ahead of time what that seller’s return policy is. Returns are a pain in the you-know-what for everyone involved, but educate yourself so you’re not caught off guard. While shopping on auction sites communicate with the seller before buying to double-check: do they offer refunds or exchanges only, which party covers shipping costs, etc.
When in Doubt, Communicate With the Seller
Before buying, be completely aware of what you’re getting. Read every word of the description; most sellers try to be as descriptive as possible. However, when in doubt, message the seller: Make sure the item is real leather if the price makes it out to be; if the color in the picture looks perfect for your bridesmaid dress, ask about it since colors can get skewed in photos. (Also, always read the payment details carefully to avoid any confusion on that front).
Check Shipping Times and Rates
One of the biggest caveats of online shopping is the cost of shipping. On auction sites there is a section under each listing titled “Shipping details”. Make sure the seller is willing to ship to you and if not, are there additional costs? If it’s unclear, send them a message and see if they do in fact ship to Kalamazoo (of course that’s only in Michigan, but it sounds so exotic). If you need the shoes soon, be sure to check on ship times or ask for shipping confirmation. You can’t go as Dorothy without ruby slippers (even ruby red high heels are cool), but it won’t do for them to be delivered on November 1st.
Combining these tips will keep your feet happy and help you to avoid feeling like the Evil Stepsister shoving your toes in something that just wasn’t meant to be!
